THE 5TH WORLD CONGRESS OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES

Xishuangbanna Biosphere Reserve

May 19, 2025

In 1993, Xishuangbanna was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Located in Southwest Yunnan, bordering Laos, it is a unique crossroads of nature and rich cultural heritage.

Spanning more than twice the size of Hong Kong, its terrain rises from valleys at 475 meters to peaks of 2,429 meters, nurturing diverse ecosystems and breathtaking landscapes.

Xishuangbanna preserves China's most intact tropical and monsoon rainforests, nurturing over 3800 vascular plant species and hundreds of rare wildlife species.

The Parashorea tree is an iconic species of Xishuangbanna's tropical rainforest. The forest also showcases fascinating phenomena such as sky gardens, solitary giants, strangler figs, and cauliflory — vivid signs of thriving and abundant life.

This sanctuary is home to rare animals including Asian elephants, lesser mouse-deer, and wild buffalo, nurturing over 90% of China's wild elephant population. Every visit offers the chance to encounter nature's wild wonders.

Xishuangbanna collaborates with Laos on transboundary conservation, jointly safeguarding this core hotspot of Asian tropical biodiversity.
